There are several different fuel types that are available on the market. Every car is designed in accordance with the fuel it is meant to consume, which go on to decide the vehicle’s mileage, emissions, and performance. Here are the different types of fuel that power cars today -

• Gasoline
Gasoline is another name for petrol and is the most commonly-used fuel across automobiles. Petrol is a fossil-fuel designed to power four-stroke engines in particular. The benefits of gasoline are evident with its quick starting, fast acceleration, easy combustion, as well as significantly quieter operation. As of now, this fuel type accounts for high emissions, making it only a temporary source until a more environmentally-friendly and sustainable option comes along.

• Diesel
Diesel is yet another fuel type popular amongst tractor-trailer trucks, buses, boats, and trains. It is again a non-renewable fossil fuel that has limited sources across the globe. Diesel accounts for fewer emissions from carbon dioxide but gives off more smog with organic compounds and nitrous oxide. Compressed Natural Gas or CNG is a clear, non-corrosive, and odorless gas that powers most vehicles. The gasoline or diesel power plants can even be converted to CNG-enabled engines to curb excessive ozone-depleting emissions.

• Liquefied Petroleum
Liquified petroleum is more commonly known as propane. It is a clean fuel alternative to gasoline but can be used only on a limited basis. This fuel type produces lesser toxins when consumed and is also inexpensive compared to gasoline.

• Bio-diesel
Bio-diesel is a substitute for diesel that generates minimal amounts of emissions while being cost-effective. It is made from converting sugar beet, rapeseed, or palm oil to liquid fuel. Bio-diesel burns cleaner than gasoline or regular diesel and produces much less carbon dioxide. The only drawback of bio-diesel consumption is the excessive deforestation that follows the demand for this fuel type.

• Ethanol
Ethanol is one of the more popular alternatives to gasoline. It is prepared by converting sugar cane, corn, barley, and other natural compounds. Ethanol is popular since gasoline cars do not require modifications to be able to run on this fuel. It is also a highly environmentally-friendly fuel option.
